We are one of the fastest growing law firms in the UK today and are clearly focused on the growth of our business for tomorrow.
A clear demonstration of our strategy is how we are bringing our brand to Manchester and now Leeds. This is the next step in our development as a truly national legal practice with real depth of expertise in all of the UK’s major commercial centres.
Henderson Boyd Jackson and Gateley Wareing came together in 2006 to create the UK’s first legal firm with significant client bases in both Scotland and England. By opening in Manchester in 2010 and Leeds in 2012, we have now brought our brand of down to earth, commercial legal advice to the north-west.
Mergers with specialist Shipping & Transport solicitors Shaw & Croft and Holmes Hardingham in 2007 and 2008 allowed the firm to create a single specialised London office located in Paternoster Square. That office continues to grow and offer our full range of legal expertise from the capital while in Scotland we merged with specialist firm Olivers to further improve our offering to individuals. Coupled with a move to brand new office accomodation in both Glasgow and Manchester, we continue to invest in our people and our business.
The firm opened a Dubai office in 2007, allowing the practice to develop international markets further and offer Middle East clients the unique Gateley blend of client focus and personal approach. It is this way of working that has helped the firm move on from humble beginnings to a truly national law firm with a unique cross-border reach. With over 30 awards over the past three years alone and a staff of over 700, Gateley remains committed to its people and its clients. It is the same focus that served our founding fathers and which continues to drive our business forward today.
But where have we come from? As a national firm that operates in both England and Scotland, our history is long in both of our original locations – Birmingham and Edinburgh.
Over 200 years ago, in 1808, Mr Boyd started a legal practice in Edinburgh focused on maritime law which thrived in a growing market of the day. A hundred years later Mr Henderson and Mr Jackson created a new legal firm that specialised in acting for landowners. These historic firms came together with a number of smaller law firms to create a Top 10 Scottish law firm by the early 1990s, Henderson Boyd Jackson. Recognising the significant goodwill attached to the HBJ brand, the firm continues to trade as HBJ Gateley in Scotland.
At the same time the commercial law firm of Stephen Gateley & Sons was operating in Birmingham’s legal district, at the top end of Corporation Street. Four generations of the Gateley family grew the firm from its Victorian beginnings to service the rising industrial and commercial needs of both individuals and their companies in Birmingham and the surrounding region.
The practice of Bernard Wareing was formed in the early part of the twentieth century and was equally committed to helping the mercantile activities of Birmingham prosper in an age when the city was renowned for being ‘the workshop of the world’. These two firms came together in 1974 and grew from humble beginnings with just 12 people, to over 200 by the late 1990s. By focusing on commercial, financial, and corporate deals, the name Gateley Wareing became well known in the Midlands business world and offices in Leicester and then Nottingham followed.
In 2003, Gateley Wareing invested in further growth when it developed its own headquarter office building in the very heart of Birmingham’s Colmore Business District. The former Ear & Throat Hospital on Edmund Street was sympathetically converted into a modern seven-storey office building which kept the beautiful Victorian facade of the hospital intact while providing innovative office space within. This includes an excellent suite of meeting rooms and roof terraces on the top two floors of the building with panoramic views across the city centre.
